Wanderings: Michigan summers

2014.Michigan.2

There is nothing like a Michigan summer.  I’ve spent part of the summer there for six of the last nine years, sometimes for just a few days and sometimes for months at a time.  It’s a magical place and I was happy to be back again this summer, staying on the same peninsula as last year, this time with a few additional friends.  We canoed, cooked, swam, overslept, and generally forgot about all our worries back home.  For the next few days, I’ll be sharing some memories of those lazy lakeside days.

Labor Day

Hoping you are all having a lovely three-day weekend filled with watermelon, naps, and good friends!

Wanderings – Detroit

Michigan Central Station

Michigan Central Station

Detroit has always been a favorite city of mine.  Such a striking juxtaposition of splendor and decay.  I used to drive around for hours taking pictures and was glad to have a chance to wander around on this most recent trip.  So much is already changing.  These photos are a mixture of old and new.

For the long weekend in Michigan, we rented a cabin in the western part of the state with good friends. Perfect weather and long golden days spent boating on our little lake, building campfires, and cooking together.  On the last day, we stopped at the beach in South Haven and swam in the chilly waters till we were past numbness and ate giant ice cream cones from our friend’s childhood haunt.

Wanderings – Ann Arbor

Scatter picking blueberries

Scatter picking blueberries

As a child in the southwest, I never understood why people loved summer until I moved to Ann Arbor in my mid-twenties. Long golden days and cool nights, littered with fireflies, ice cream and more flowers than I’d ever seen.  I’d never really believed in the summers I read about in Anne of Green Gables; Ann Arbor made me understand.

In need of a summer getaway, the Mister and I spent the better part of last week there visiting with old friends, picking blueberries, and eating more than our fair share of ice cream.
