Those hazy, blossom-filled spring days.

Magnolia × soulangeana

I have a secret park.  It’s a few blocks off the beaten cherry blossom path, and for one week every spring it explodes into a little pink magnolia haven.  Year after year, I wait for that week, and when it comes, I go out of my way every day to walk through, quiet and lush, my little secret.

It’s Friday, I’m in love

2014.Massachusetts.21

Hectic weeks can be exhausting but so rewarding!  I spent a few days traveling in the Midwest for work, and now I’m back in California for another west coast wedding!  I just love it here so much and I’m happy to be seeing so many friends and excited to spend a little time exploring Venice Beach, before heading up to Monterey.  California, I just love you so much; almost as much as the gorgeous sunflowers we saw while driving around on little roads in Massachusetts.   Those sunny blooms are just like my mood these days.

Have a great weekend!

Wanderings: The North Shore

2014.Massachusetts.2

The Mister grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts and we went for a little family visit this summer.  I love the rocky, marshy coastal communities in the area, especially in the warmer months.  I’d be content driving from little town to little town, picking up sea glass, and eating fried clams and lobster.  I’ll be sharing photos from our visit over the next few days, starting with these shots of sea glass and hydrangeas at my in-laws’ cozy house in the woods.

Don’t you love short weeks?  I’m happy for another weekend, as well as a little break from the steamy weather we’ve been having lately.  We’re planning to see a few friends, and if it isn’t too rainy, catch a ballgame.  If we do get rained out, I’ll just try to brighten things up indoors by picking up a few blossoms, like these lovely yellow and red Butterfly Weeds that I got last weekend from the Women’s Coop in Bethesda.

Hope you have a great weekend!

[Edit 8:30am]  Turns out my flowers lived up to their name!  After almost a week on our dining room table, I suddenly noticed two giant caterpillars munching away on the leaves!  Those little guys got set free outside before I left for work, but I’m sure their new bush is nowhere near as tasty as my flowers.

It’s Friday, I’m in love

2014.Madison.12

A long weekend is upon us and we have big plans to do… not much.  We’re staying in town and planning to spend three days taking naps, working through our Netflix queue, and having a few romantic picnics on the roof-deck.  It sounds pretty dreamy to me.

Have a great weekend!

California love notes

2014.California.101

This is the last of my love letters to California, at least until late September when we’re scheduled to be back for another couple of weeks.  I already miss her rocky coastline and golden fields.  I want to buy avocados 9 for $1. I want to take long drives with the windows down and have the air switch back and forth from smelling like the salty sea to eucalyptus every few blocks.  I want to stuff myself silly with tacos, and then I want to burn a little in the sun, only to have the landscape taken over by rolling fog few minutes later.  I want to drink a bottle of local wine very slowly and sleep in late, all curled up against my Mister.  We have a bunch of other adventures lined up for this summer, but right now my heart belongs to the west coast.

Picked up these beauties at the farmers market this past weekend, and had fun riding home as the girl with flowers in her bike basket, which is every girl’s dream, right?

Quiet dear, I’m blooming within

Sure, wildflowers grow just about everywhere, but nothing compares to my memories of them in Texas.  The harsh sun means wildflowers there are of a hardier stock that the delicate beauties that grow in the north, and throughout the spring and summer, the state bursts into fields of bluebonnets, paintbrushes, Mexican hats, and black-eyed Susans.  While I was in Austin last weekend, the firewheels were in bloom, lining the highways, and filling people’s gardens and all the fields with the only kind of wildfire that is welcome around here.

The world is quiet here

...

Spring is full of many lovely moments.  Daffodils.  Tulips.  Cherry blossoms.  I look forward to them all, but my favorite part of the season happens in a quiet park not too far from where I work.  About a week before the cherry blossoms bloom and the city is overtaken with tourists, this little park, lined on all sides by tulip magnolias, quietly becomes a sea of large, pink blossoms.  Every year, for that one week, I walk out of my way to pass through this park, leaving for work a little early so I’ll have a bit of extra time to linger in this quiet, blush-colored oasis.

The magic spell you cast

It’s hard to imagine anything lovelier than Paris in springtime, and my mother and I couldn’t have timed our visit any better.  The city was aglow with freshly blossomed trees and tulips, and we basked in their glow, spending idle hours sitting on benches and enjoying the sweet smell of blooms on the breeze.

Last weekend was long, quiet, and romantic, which was just perfect as we have a lot of traveling apart coming up in the next few weeks.  Friday night we stayed in, exchanged Valentines, and made pizza.  Saturday we went out to try a new, well-reviewed Italian restaurant, then had dinner and a movie on Sunday, and spent part of Monday reading in cafe.  It was nice to extend the romance of the season out all weekend, and it didn’t hurt to have these gorgeous tulips from the Mister, brightening up the apartment whenever we were home.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Valentine’s day and Friday!  I may have to work late tonight, but I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with my Mister.  Lately, I’ve been really into having fresh flowers around the house, so I picked up these orangey-pink rose at my local flower shop and they’ve been brightening up my mood.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Put some flowers ’round my room

...

Sometimes all you really need to brighten up your gloomy winter days are $10 worth of flowers from the shop down the street.  It’s extra nice when they wrap up your bright yellow mimosas and cabbage flower with brown paper and string.  Looking at these beauties, I can almost imagine it’s spring.
